Fisheries Research Institute
Fisheries Research Institute, Durres (FRI) is the unique institute of
the field in Albania.
The routines of the scientific work of FRI, Durres.
· Following of the actual situation of fish resources in marine and
inland waters and the proposal of right measures for a scientific and
responsible exploitation of them.
· Leading and checking the dynamics of development of acquaculture in
the country.
· Leading and controlling the actual situation in various ecosystems and
the proposal of the right measures for the conservation of biodiversity.
· FRI proposes is responsible for the introduction of new species in
various types of the waters in the country.
· FRI organises and distributes the world experience in the field.
· It gives his technical assistance for private fisherman, fish farmers,
compilation of fishing regulations and the preparing of new specialists
of the field.

FRI employee's 51 co-workers:
from whom 11 are researchers, 7 are
technicians, 27 fish growing workers and 6 people work in administration.
The services that the FRI offers for the others.
Beginning from the academic preparation, experience of the scientific
staff and the fish farms under its administration for the production of
fingerlings the FRI offers the following services.
1. The FRI offers to the fish farmers of common carp salmonids, and
mussels fish farmers technological project for the construction of new
farms for fingerlings and fish market growing production.
2. FRI offers technological guides for the managment of fish farms.
3. It gives councils to the fish farmers for measures to be taken for
prevention of various fish discuses.
4. FRI offers to fish farmers larvae, fingerlings and broodstocks of
common carp and chinese carp species.
5. On the request of the fish farmers FRI offers the construction of
small scale fishing gears as: gillnets, beach seines, fykes etc.
6. FRI offers to the fisherman various fishing maps used for trawl
fishing
7. FRI offers chemical analyses of waters to be used for fish culture
8. FRI recommends the appropriate marine and inland waters to be used
for fish culture purposes.
Collaboration
FRI collaborates with:
a. The University of Tirana, Faculty of Natural Sciences (Department of
Botany).
b. Other similar institutes of France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Croatia,
Slovenia etc.
c. It collaborates with VRI for the project of monitoring of bivalve
mussels and the study of their abundance.
d. The Agriculture University of Tirana in the field of joint research
work.
§ Publication of didactic and scientific work.
§ Determination of post graduation themes for students.
§ For the compilation of the curricula of Animal Production Department.
§ Compilation of programmes and school texts of aquaculture and of the
fishery field.
§ Engagement of the specialists of FRI, its labs and farms to realise
the programmes in practice.
§ Participation in joint technical and administrative forums as: (Scientific
Council).
Vision for the future
For the future the FRI aims:
- Introduction and application of new technologies in the aquaculture
field, especially the `culture of marine species as: shrimp, sea bass,
sea bream in cages and in soil bottom farms.
- New projects for improvements of existing technologies of culture of
carp family species and mussel culture.
- The raising of the quality of the studies carried out by the FRI by
using new methods and modern equipment.
- Training of its existing staff.
