Karavasta Lagoon is one of the richest ecosystems from the biodiversity point of view. It lies approximately halfway along Albania's western coastline. The surface area of the lagoon covers 3900ha and it is connected with the sea via three channels.

The average water depth is 0.7-0.8m, the salinity is 15mg/l in winter rising 58mg/l in summer with an annual average of 25mg/l. fish yields in recent years have ranged between 100-300kg/ha per year, and reached as much as 50-60mt of eels annually in the best years.

Fishing along the coast and in the lagoon is undertaken by a cooperative of 90 people. For fishing they use fish weir in the channels and gill nets, hooks and other selective gear. Also they use eel traps.
