Research in Albania
The scientific institution in Albania responsible for fisheries research
is the Fisheries Research Institutes of Durres. Other institutions, which
can be involved in capture fisheries - related research or aquaculture,
are from the University (Tirana university and Tirana Agriculture
University) and the Academy of Sciences (Biological Research Institute)
Fisheries Research Institutes is involved in two main directions on the
frame of research:
1) Fish stock assessment and
2) aquaculture. In the
frame of bottom fish stock assessment of resources there are several
programs:
1) National program financed by Ministry of Agriculture and Food; The
objectives of the project are:
(i) the Identification of cephalopods
species fished in coastal waters of Durres Bay and their contribution to
the total yield according to various species, and
(ii) Collection of
length - frequency data, calculation of growth parameters and abundance
indices coefficient in weight and number per surface unit, comparing
with previous years.
2) Medits program, financed by EU. The objectives of this program are:
a. To contribute to the description of the distribution and abundance of
the demersal resources in the Mediterranean, as well as of their
demographic structure, and
b. To produce data for modelling of the species dynamics.
c. To contribute for a new fisheries management approach integrated into
ecosystem management elaborated in different forums, notably through the
FAO in the Code of Conduct for a Responsible Fishery
The program was also defined so as to permit the acquisition of
biological parameters on reference species.
3) Adriamed bottom trawl - survey program:
Regarding Adriamed project there is under implementation, since 2001 the
commercial catch monitoring and biological sampling of small pelagic,
jointly with the other countries involved in Adriamed: Croatia, Italia
and Slovenia through the specific regional program established by the
FAO - Adriamed Project. This is the first research Program on small
pelagic resources since ten years in Albania.
4) Transfer of technology for the conservation of marine environment in
the frame of Interreg II.
The main objective of the project is to set up technological and
scientific relationships between Italian and Albanian scientists and
technicians through exchange of technical and scientific information in
the field of control and management of marine resources and environment,
more in detail to instruction Albanian technicians and researchers about
the measures adopted in Italy for the protection of fish resources, main
methods of fishing not causing damage to the environment, applying
practically some of them. The advantage is given to aspects related to
blue fish (anchovy and sardine), in order to rehabilitate the canning
industry, which in the recent past was an important chapter of Albanian
fishery.
A research program in the aquaculture field, financed by the Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, is under implementation by this institute. The aim
of this study has to do with the environmental impact assessment of the
aquaculture with cage culture in the sea, as well as the determination
of the most appropriate areas for the future development. Especially the
program aims are:
a. Study the ecological effects of extensive aquaculture in
Butrinti and Karavasta lagoons.
b. Effect of intensive cage culture in the environment; Compare of water
parameters used in cage culture and those not used.
c. Environmental effects of waters used for shrimp farming in Kavaja
farm.
As a Fisheries Directorate we are under implementation of survey on
socio -economic data in the frame of Adriamed project. The survey was
implemented in every fishing port and the sample group was choice in
random way. Three forms compose this survey:
1. Personal data
2. Crew working conditions and fishing.
3. Maritime district characteristics and relations. |
