The
Port of Durres has existed since ancient times. In the VI VIII
centuries B.C. the Illyrians knew it under the name of Epidamnus. Three
centuries later the ancient Greeks renamed it Dyrrachium (the town
between two hills).

The Port
of Durres is sited to the south of the town, in the northern part of the
Bay of Durres. The Bay of Durres is about 18 km long from north to south,
with a coastline of about 7 km to the east. To the west the waterline is
more than 10 m deep. The Bay of Durres is well protected by the Durres
Cape from north-western winds, and by the Lagj Cape from eastern winds,
by the land and from south-eastern winds. |

Durres fishing Port is situated into the Commercial Durres Port and is
sandwiched between a very active ferry terminal undergoing
reconstruction and expansion and the ship- yard, with a total surface of
15 000 m2. |

In this
Port are 75 fishing vessels or 38% of total Albanian fishing vessels.
84% of them fish bottom species and 6% fish small pelagic species, like
sardines and 12% are selective vessels. Is calculated that the fish
production from Durres is about 660 ton/yeare. |
